The G20 Summit, which begins on September 9 in New Delhi, the capital of India, will be attended by the heads of state of the wealthiest and most powerful nations in the world. Today the 1st day of the summit took place. The G20 or Group of 20 is an intergovernmental forum comprised of 19 sovereign countries, the African Union, and the European Union.
For the first time ever, India will play host to such a potent delegation of world leaders. Public buildings and sidewalks have been painted recently, and decorative flowers and fountains have been placed at traffic roundabouts.
Anti-drone systems, langur cutouts to deter monkeys, and 130,000 police and paramilitary troops are used to guarantee security.
What is the G20?
After the Asian financial crisis in 1999, the world’s 20 largest nations came together to form an economic bloc with the notion that similar crises could no longer be confined within a nation’s boundaries and required improved international economic cooperation.
At the moment, the bloc is responsible for 75% of global commerce and 80% of the world’s GDP.
Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union are among its members.
After the 2008 financial crisis, heads of all member countries resolved to have a leaders’ summit once a year, even if only treasury chiefs convened in the early years.
This year, the G20 summit 2023, is planned to be held in New Delhi and the 1st day is already complete. In the midst of a severe geopolitical rift over the conflict in Ukraine that threatens any progress, leaders from the Group of 20 (G20) major economies will begin a summit in India’s capital on Saturday. They are trying to find solutions to some of the most serious issues facing the world.
What are the key issues this year?
The bloc’s deliberations during India’s one-year presidency have focused on increasing the number of loans given to developing countries by multilateral institutions, overhauling the system of international debt, regulating cryptocurrencies, and the effect of geopolitical unpredictability on the security of food and energy.
The bloc hasn’t released any united comments thus far this year because it is bitterly split over how to phrase statements about the conflict in Ukraine.
Russia and China oppose attributing Moscow’s role in the conflict in Ukraine, but Western nations like the United States, France, and Canada have demanded a strong denunciation as a prerequisite for a united statement.
The theme of this year’s summit is derived from the Sanskrit phrase “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” which translates to “The World is One Family”.
