During a Saturday campaign rally, Donald Trump was shot in the ear. The attack left his face covered in blood and caused his security guards to surround him. After the attack, he came out and raised his fist in the air while mouthing the phrase “Fight! Fight! Fight!”

The Secret Service sent a statement stating that the gunman had died, one rally attendee had died, and two more onlookers had been hurt. An assassination attempt was being looked into in relation to the incident.

Reporters were informed by law enforcement that while they had made a tentative identification of a suspect, they were not yet prepared to make it public. They added that they had not yet determined the motivation.

The assassination attempt

The guns fired as Trump, 78, was just getting begun with his speech. His right hand went to his right ear, and he looked at it before falling to his knees behind the podium, just in time to be covered by a flurry of Secret Service operatives. A minute or so later, he came out, his red “Make America Great Again” hat falling off, and he was heard yelling, “Wait, wait,” before giving a fist bump and being hurried by agents to a black SUV.

Trump later remarked on his Truth Social platform, “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” in response to the incident in Butler, Pennsylvania, which happened around 30 miles (50 km) north of Pittsburgh. “Much bleeding took place.”

Less than four months have passed since the shooting, which takes place before Trump’s rematch with Democratic President Joe Biden on November 5. According to most opinion surveys, including those conducted by Reuters and Ipsos, the two are in a tight race.

Prominent Democrats and Republicans denounced the violence right away.

According to the Trump campaign, he is “doing well.”

“This kind of violence has no place in America,” stated Biden in a statement. To denounce it, we as a nation must come together.”

Representative Ronny Jackson of Texas, a Republican, informed Fox News that his nephew had suffered injuries at the rally.

Trump getting lifetime Secret Service protection

The shooting sparked immediate concerns about security lapses by the Secret Service, which offers lifetime protection to former presidents like Trump.

Since the attempted assassination of Republican President Ronald Reagan in 1981, this was the first shooting of a sitting president of the United States or a major party candidate.

Pennsylvania State Police assisted the U.S. Secret Service in securing Trump’s departure from the Butler area, according to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. Trump is on his way to Bedminster, New Jersey, where he owns a golf club, according to Republican U.S. Representative Daniel Meuser, who spoke with CNN.

Witness accounts

At the rally, Ron Moose, a Trump fan, reported hearing roughly four gunshots. “I saw the crowd go down and then Trump ducked also real quick,” he stated. “As quickly as they could, the Secret Service sprang into action to safeguard him. They were all defending him, and here we are chatting in a moment.”

An eyewitness who claimed to have seen a man crawling up a roof close to the event and brandishing a gun was interviewed by the BBC. The individual, whose identity was withheld by the BBC, claimed that he and the others he was with began pointing at the man in an attempt to warn security.

The FBI has identified the alleged gunman, a 20-year-old Pennsylvania man, according to CNN, which cited sources. The bullets from the assailant reportedly hit a civilian

Democrats and Republicans condemn violence

At the commencement of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Monday, Trump is expected to accept the official nomination of his party.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson posted on social media, saying, “This horrific act of political violence at a peaceful campaign rally has no place in this country and should be unanimously and forcefully condemned.”

Chuck Schumer, the Democratic majority leader in the Senate, expressed his shock at the events and relief that Trump was safe. “Political violence has no place in our country,” he stated.

According to a campaign official, Biden’s team was stopping all outbound communication and delaying its television commercials.

Recent Reuters/Ipsos polling indicates that Americans are afraid of an increase in political violence. In a May study, two out of every three respondents expressed concern that violence may occur after the election.

A few Republican backers of Trump expressed their opinion that the incident had political motivations.

“Democrat leaders have been promoting absurd panic that Donald Trump winning reelection would spell the end of democracy in America for weeks,” stated U.S. Representative Steve Scalise, the second-ranking Republican in the House who survived a shooting incident in 2017 that was driven by politics. It’s obvious that extreme leftists have used violent rhetoric to act out in the past. This inflammatory language needs to quit.”

Trump, the president from 2017 to 2021, easily defeated his opponents early in the race for the Republican nomination. He has also succeeded in uniting the party, which had momentarily wavered after his supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, in an effort to overturn his election defeat in 2020.

The businessman and former reality TV personality had a number of legal concerns going into the new year, including four distinct criminal prosecutions. He was found guilty in late May of attempting to conceal payments of hush money to a porn star. However, a number of factors, including a ruling earlier this month by the Supreme Court that found him to be partially immune from prosecution, have put a stop to the other three prosecutions he faces, two of which are related to his attempts to reverse his defeat.

Without providing any proof, Trump asserts that Biden is behind all four prosecutions in an attempt to keep him from taking office again.

Seated in the front row of the rally, Republican candidate for U.S. Senate David McCormick said he had begun to go up on stage when Trump suggested he would have him come up later.

“I heard the gunshot in less than a minute or two… In an interview with Reuters, he stated, “It was obvious that it was gunfire. “It seemed like an attempt at assassination… It was horrifying.”
